The University of Mississippi Academic Invitational Tournament (UMAIT), sponsored by the Division of Outreach and Office of Pre-College Programs, is an annual quiz bowl tournament for the state of Mississippi and neighboring schools in the Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee areas. This tournament welcomes 64 teams from these areas to compete in a fun and scholarly atmosphere.
UMAIT’s setup is a double elimination format with brackets separated by class divisions based on school size. Teams compete for their class division championship and overall tournament championship.
The next UMAIT tournament will be February 1, 2014 at the University of Mississippi’s Oxford campus.
Tournament registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and will end at 8:20 a.m. in the lobby of Conner Hall. All teams must check-in at the registration table before competing. Round One will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. If a team arrives more than 5 minutes late to a match, the match will be automatically forfeited.
In each round, there will be 16 concurrent matches. Therefore, 32 teams will have no match from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m.; the other 32 teams will have no match from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. During the time a team does not have a match, we encourage you and your team to enjoy our beautiful campus. Please remember to return in time for a match. Any team that is not in place at the scheduled time will forfeit the match.
Lunch will not be provided. The Food Court in the Ole Miss Student Union will be open for lunch, but not for breakfast. This option is probably best for lunch since you will not have to leave campus. There is a wide variety of choices for lunch, such as Burger Studio, Chick-fil-A Express, Magnolia Kitchen, Subway, Southern Tsunami Sushi, Topio’s, Toss It Up, and Zoca’s. The Ole Miss Bookstore in the Union will also be open if some of your students would like to browse and shop after lunch or grab of cup of Starbuck’s coffee.
The following are the class divisions based on high school size, set by the coordinating committee.
Class 1A: <500
Class 2A: 500-1000
Class 3A: >1000
The Lyceum is the center of the Ole Miss campus (building #1). It faces the Circle, and is the western end of University Avenue. UMAIT will take place in several buildings within easy walking distance of the Lyceum. Saturday parking is available around the Circle and in other locations on the campus.
UMAIT Headquarters will be located in Conner Hall. The tournament director’s cell phone number on tournament day, should you get lost or otherwise need to contact him, will be 662-466-1622.
Conner Hall will be the location of the registration, bracket rounds in the morning and early afternoon, and the championship rounds in the mid-afternoon.
Holman Hall will be the location of a bracket round in the morning and early afternoon.
Hume Hall will also be the location of a bracket round in the morning and early afternoon.
The Ole Miss Student Union will be open for lunch and for students to browse and shop in the Ole Miss Bookstore.
The best way to come to the Oxford campus of the University of Mississippi from any direction is to come to Oxford on either Highway 6 (which is an east/west road) or Highway 7 (which is a north/south road), then take Highway 6 to the Old Taylor Road exit just south of the campus.
Exit Highway 6 at Old Taylor Road. Turn north and go approximately ¾ mile until Old Taylor Road dead ends at University Avenue. The Gertrude Ford Center for the Performing Arts will be directly in front of you. Turn left (west) on University Avenue, immediately cross a bridge, and then take a right at the four-way stop.
Because some teams will want to drive to Oxford on Friday afternoon prior to the Saturday tournament, the following lodging information is provided.
