Summer Academy

Spend 3 weeks in the summer with rising 8th-10th graders from across the U.S. and the world on the UM campus. Courses ranging from SAT prep and creative writing to history and social studies allow you to earn high school credit in an American college setting which can count toward high school graduation requirements. Through Summer Academy, you can also make new friends and contacts, learn time management, and improve study habits.

The daily routine

Students attend a morning class session from 8:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by lunch. Students attend a second session from 12:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. At the conclusion of the second class, students have time to work on special projects or homework assignments. After this study time, students have group recreation time in which they bond with each other, learn about campus, meet current students to learn about opportunities in college, and generally decompress from the day. Students eat dinner at 5:30 p.m. Following dinner, students will have the opportunity for tutoring sessions, computer lab time, and study groups as well as some free time. Because the days are long and full, we have counselors with the students at all times and a curfew that is strictly imposed.

On weekends the daily routine is broken up with trips around Oxford to see movies, go swimming, go bowling, see the annual Shakespeare Festival, and enjoy the town’s Summer Concert Series. One weekend will also include a service-oriented activity with a local charity organization.

Housing

Students live together in a traditional dormitory on The University of Mississippi campus. Each room is shared by two students of the same gender and bathroom facilities are shared on each floor or wing. Counselors live in housing with students and are available to assist students 24 hours a day. Approximately 40 students share bathroom facilities and each bathroom and wing is single gender. Access to dorms is granted by using the student ID card to enter the main doors — which are always locked — and using a traditional key to enter the student’s room. Guests are not allowed and a curfew is strictly enforced for being inside the dorm for check in, as well as for “lights out.”
