Summer College for High School Students

Earn college credit and experience life on a traditional American college campus while meeting other high school students from around the United States and the world. Through SCHS, rising junior and senior high school students spend four weeks on the UM campus taking 6 hours of college credit in areas ranging from business and health professions to art and journalism and everything in between.

The daily routine

A Summer College student’s day is constructed to approximate the busy schedule of a college freshman during the regular semester. After all, learning to budget time and to meet all obligations is part of being successful in college. Most Summer College students are in class for approximately 4 hours per day, but time in class can vary based on subject and class activities.

During the afternoons, students attend SCHS 101 Exploring Sessions and participate in the SCHS intramural league (creative, academic, and athletic activities).

Time outside of class and afternoon activities is open to students to use for studying, visiting the library, spending time in the computer center, etc. The University’s recreational facilities are also available for SCHS students to swim, play racquetball, run, lift weights, work out, play tennis, etc. Other students prefer to just hang out in the Student Union or spend time in The Grove (the 10-acre park at the center of campus) with friends.

On the weekends there are activities planned to entertain as well as inform students. Past events have included trips to museums, exhibitions, and even a Memphis Redbird’s baseball game. It’s not uncommon for the group to take a trip to the Mississippi River to catch a ride on the Memphis Queen Riverboat for a dinner cruise or to stay in Oxford and go to a nearby lake for Frisbee Golf and barbeque. Summer College staff can also make arrangements for students to attend the worship services of their choice at one of our local churches.

Housing

Students live together in a traditional dormitory on The University of Mississippi campus. Each room is shared by two students of the same gender and bathroom facilities are shared on each floor or wing. Counselors live in housing with students and are available to assist students 24 hours a day. Approximately 40 students share bathroom facilities and each bathroom and wing is single gender. Access to dorms is granted by using the student ID card to enter the main doors — which are always locked — and using a traditional key to enter the student’s room. Guests are not allowed and a curfew is strictly enforced for being inside the dorm for check in, as well as for “lights out.”
