Students will:

  • Explore the rich culture and heritage of Austin, learning why Austin has the
    iconic slogan, “Keep Austin Weird.”
  • Live local in the deep rooted food culture and food truck scene.
  • Experience the famous live music venues of 6th Street.
  • Enjoy the natural beauty of Austin and Lake Travis, visiting the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and eating at The Oasis overlooking Lake Travis.
  • Spend the days, and nights, gathering ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Learn to apply a range rhetorical methods to convey their traveled path to others.

Prerequisites:

  • Writ 100 or Writ 101 or Hon 101
  • Writ 102 or Hon 102 or Liba 102

Who should go?

Students with wanderlust and a notebook, be it digital or analog. Professional Writing Minors can use this course to meet their course requirements. School of Journalism Students seeking to fulfill their “Diversity Credit” requirement. Students needing an upper level writing class.

Dates:

Students will meet on the Oxford campus on July 31, 2017. The instructor determines time and location. The program dates are August 2-7, 2017 in Austin, TX. August 1 is a travel day, students should arrive in Austin in the evening on the 1st, to begin class on the morning of the 2nd.

Travel:

Students will make their own travel arrangements to Austin, TX. Airfare can be billed to your bursar account by making arrangements through Amber Gregory at Travel Leaders at AGregory@travelleaders.com or (800) 624-6579, ext. 151.

Costs:

Course fee is $795. Included in the course fee are housing, group ground transportation, and select group meals. Excluded from the cost are the Study USA application fee, meals, tuition, airfare, and personal spending money.
