Students will:

  • Spend one week in the Delta region, based primarily in Clarksdale, MS.
  • Learn about working with publicly available demographic and population health data, and learn strategies and techniques for assisting community leaders to apply that data.
  • Work directly with individuals from the communities visited in the Delta during facilitation of participatory workshops.
  • Develop a working knowledge of community assessment and applied research.
  • Be able to combine demographic and health quantitative research with interactive, participatory, field-based research.
  • Apply and practice skills through an applied research service-learning project, collaborating with local nonprofits, community health centers, and hospitals.
  • Have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich culture of the Delta, including the opportunity to visit the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretative Center in Indianola.

Location:

Students will be based in Clarksdale, MS, and will travel to several locations in the Delta

Who should go?

This course will be of particular interest to students enrolled in, or planning to apply to, the Society and Health minor. This course is open to all students with instructor approval.

Dates:

May 13-19 in Clarksdale, MS and the surrounding area.

Travel:

Students will arrange their own travel to and from Clarksdale. Group ground transportation will be provided during the course.

Costs:

Program cost is $800 plus tuition. Included in the cost are housing, group ground transportation, breakfast, and select group meals. Excluded from the cost are the Study USA application fee, tuition, most meals, travel expenses to/from Clarksdale, and personal spending money.
