Social Entrepreneurship in Mississippi

Itinerary subject to change. Students should wait to make travel arrangements after confirming dates and times with instructor.

Students will:

  • Learn about the problems and skills involved in solving economic or social issues which exist in a community and how social entrepreneurship can impact community needs
  • Examine social entrepreneurship as a means of empowerment while in class on the Oxford campus
  • Explore Clarksdale, Greenville, and Cleveland, Mississippi
  • Take a canoe trip with the Quapaw Canoe Company
  • Dine at Ground Zero, and visit Po' Monkey's Lounge

Location:

In addition to time on The University of Mississippi campus, students will stay in Clarksdale and visit various places in the Mississippi Delta including Greenville and Cleveland.

Who should go?

This course is for students in the business, accounting, Southern studies, history, sociology, social work, or any student interested in social entrepreneurship and community engagement. Members of the Ole Miss Entrepreneurship Club might also find this course of interest.

Dates:

Students will spend May 12-16 on Oxford's campus. Students will then travel to Clarksdale and spend May 18-24 in the Mississippi Delta.

Travel:

Students will make their own travel arrangements to and from the Clarksdale area. Group ground transportations and shared accommodations will be provided.

Costs:

Program cost is $750 plus tuition. Included in the cost are lodging, group ground transportation, a group dinner and luncheon, tours, and canoe trip. Excluded from the cost are the Study USA application fee, tuition, meals, and personal spending money.
