Fiber Field Trip

New Orleans, Louisiana

Join the long-awaited Fiber Field Trip cohosted with the Oxford Fiber Festival as we tour the New Orleans art scene, eat plenty of beignets, and visit some of the best fiber shops in the Deep South. This three-day journey will cover entry into the acclaimed New Orleans Museum of Art, a lecture and mini-class at ricRack New Orleans, and feature plenty of dedicated shopping time at Quarter Stitch near the historic Jackson Square and French Market. 

Whether you are looking for a safe, convenient way to start a little solo travel or are getting the girls together for a fun weekend away, we'd love to have you join our Fiber Field Trip in New Orleans. 

Dates: February 26-28, 2027
Cost: $1325 for a Single Traveler (1 person in a room), $1650 for a Pair of Travelers (2 people in a room)
Deadline to Register: January 15, 2027

A minimum of 8 people is required for this trip. If the minimum is not reached, all participants will be informed and refunded.

Academic Travelers will:

  • Ride the City of New Orleans train from Marks, MS, to New Orleans (shuttle from Oxford to Marks included)
  • Visit and tour the New Orleans Museum of Art
  • Attend a mini class and lecture at ricRack NOLA a sewing and textile recycling nonprofit
  • Shop at Quarter Stitch a Knitting & Needlepoint Boutique
  • Explore the French Market
  • Sample New Orleans cuisine including dinner at Killer PoBoys, lunch at the Cafe NOMA, and beignets at Cafe du Monde – City Park

Included in the program cost:

  • Accommodations at the Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown
  • Tour fees at the New Orleans Museum of Art
  • All breakfasts, one lunch, and one dinner, including beignets at Cafe du Monde – City Park
  • Ground transportation to and from the train station in Marks, MS, via chartered shuttle
  • Shuttle to and from the train depot to the hotel in New Orleans
  • Class fees at ricRack NOLA

Excluded from the program cost:

  • Travel insurance
  • Meals, other than those listed above
  • Train tickets

  • Other local transportation in New Orleans

This trip is for adults 18 and up, and it is geared to art lovers and fiber crafters but is open to all! If you want to see a unique side of New Orleans, we would love to have you! 

New Orleans is best explored on foot, and this trip features a hotel within a mile of most of our programs as well as additional experiences you can see on your own. However, there are ample public transportation options (including the historic trolley!) and ride share services available throughout New Orleans.

This trip is not just for those located in Oxford, and you can join us anywhere along the line for the City of New Orleans. Click here to see all the stations where the train stops.

Stacey Sanford

Stacey is the Program Director of the Oxford Fiber Arts Festival and train enthusiast. She loves to plan family friendly travel and has lived off and on in New Orleans for several years. Stacey enjoys good food and long road trips with a knitting project and great friends.

Caitlin Hopper

Caitlin serves as a Coordinator of Lifelong and Enrichment Programs for the University of Mississippi, overseeing both Communiversity and Academic Traveler. She provides administrative support to all Academic Traveler trips. A seasoned traveler, having visited over half the states and a dozen foreign countries, she is excited to help people explore new places.
