Training High School Students to Become Educators
EdStart is a program designed to ignite interest in education and explore the diverse career paths within the field. Participants take an introductory course on the history of the American education system, focusing on key figures who shaped its evolution.
Through both coursework and hands-on learning activities, students gain practical insights into educational practices. This program is ideal for those passionate about making a positive impact on young lives and shaping a brighter future.

Academics
The EdStart program combines engaging coursework with the opportunity to explore your interests in education and related fields.
You’ll start by taking a required course with your cohort, then choose an elective to further personalize your learning.
Required Course
EDFD 209: Foundations of American Education
Dive into the history and evolution of American education, exploring how social movements, key figures, and policies have shaped schools and teaching practices. This course provides a rich overview of education’s role in society, focusing on both national and Mississippi-specific influences.
Elective Courses (choose one):
PSY 201: General Psychology
Discover the science behind human behavior—study everything from motivation and emotion to intelligence and social interactions.
SOC 101: Introduction to Sociology
Explore how society shapes individuals and uncovers the power dynamics and social forces behind institutions like politics, education, and the economy.
SPCH 102: Fundamentals of Public Speaking
Build confidence and polish your presentation skills as you learn how to speak effectively in front of any audience, with a focus on message delivery and engaging visuals.
Admissions
EdStart is a competitive program. To secure a spot, students are encouraged to apply by the early decision deadline. Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for dual enrollment admission to the University of Mississippi.
Preferential consideration will be given to students who:
- Are interested in Special Education or STEM
- Are enrolled in Teacher Academy
- Are Mississippi residents
