Travel Overview

Go beyond textbooks and lecture halls. Study USA’s travel courses combine academic learning with hands-on, real world experiences. Every class maximizes its unique location with immersive activities. 

You’ll earn academic credit, apply what you’re learning directly to your surroundings, and engage in lively class experiences—all guided by Ole Miss faculty.

What You'll Do

  • Prepare geologic and engineering reports, maps, and figures.
  • Work on geologic engineering mapping exercises covering topics like hydrology, environmental applications, hazards engineering, and more.
  • Explore the historic and unique town of Santa Fe.

What You'll Learn

  • See and study interesting geomorphological features and unique formations not seen in the Eastern US.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the professional skills required to be in the field.
  • Learn advanced applications of geological engineering field instruments and techniques.
  • Enhance your geologic observation and interpretation skills.

All activities are tentative and subject to change depending on scheduling, booking availability, and course adjustments.

Meet Your Instructor

All Study USA courses are designed and led by Ole Miss faculty. Your instructor(s) will be your first point of contact during your travels and lead you through all the class experiences.

Professor of Geology & Geological Engineering

Dr. Robert M. Holt joined the University of Mississippi faculty of Geology and Geological Engineering in August of 2000. He earned his B.S. in Geological Engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1983. He went on to earn his M.S. in Geology from University of Texas at El Paso in 1988 and his Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Science from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in 2004. That same year, Dr. Holt received the School of Engineering Junior Faculty Research Award.

His areas of expertise include contaminant transport, engineering geology, environmental engineering, environmental geology, geological engineering, geostatistics, groundwater, groundwater hydrology, hydrology, nuclear waste disposal, stochastic hydrology, subsurface geological characterization, and vadose zone hydrology.

Geology and Geological Engineering

Pre-Requisites:

To enroll in this course, students should have successfully passed Geomorphology, Geological Engineering Design Field Camp 1, Structural and Tectonic Geology, and Engineering Geology.

Prior to Departure

On-Campus: April (exact dates to be determined)

Meet once with your Ole Miss instructors during the Spring semester for an orientation with information about the course.

During Travel

Travel: July 27-August 10, 2025

  • Students make their own travel arrangements to and from Santa Fe.
  • Study USA will arrange all necessary ground transportation during your travel dates, starting from your arrival.
  • Study USA also books and provides double-occupancy rooms.
  • Instructor will share meeting times during orientation.
  • Students may have their airfare billed to their bursar account. You’ll receive details upon course enrollment.

At Program End

To close out your experience, you'll create field notebooks and deliver projects throughout the course.

Who We Are
