Travel Overview

Go beyond textbooks and lecture halls. Study USA’s travel courses combine academic learning with hands-on, real world experiences. Every class maximizes its unique location with immersive activities. 

You’ll earn academic credit, apply what you’re learning directly to your surroundings, and engage in lively class experiences—all guided by Ole Miss faculty.

What You'll Learn

  • Explore the Latest in Education Policy: Gain an introduction to recent education policy and key issues in state and federal education policy.
  • Develop Policy Analysis Skills: Develop skills to critically analyze and interpret higher education policies.
  • Present Like a Pro: Learn how to effectively present proposed policies to stakeholders to make an impact.

What You'll Do

  • Hear from state policy makers and decision-makers who shape Mississippi's education policies.
  • Learn from national experts as you listen to representatives from national higher education organizations who develop proposed policies for legislators.
  • Connect with high-level federal policy makers in Washington, D.C.
  • Meet with national organizations based in D.C. to gain insights into proposed policies.
  • Present proposed policy to stakeholders at the end of the course.
  • Explore D.C.: Take advantage of the opportunity to visit key landmarks, including the Capitol and the Supreme Court.

All activities are tentative and subject to change depending on scheduling, booking availability, and course adjustments.

Meet Your Instructor

All Study USA courses are designed and led by Ole Miss faculty. Your instructor(s) will be your first point of contact during your travels and lead you through all the class experiences.

Dr. Macey Edmondson is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education and Graduate Program Coordinator for the Department of Higher Education. Dr. Edmondson also serves as the Faculty Director of the Online Ed.D. Program. Before joining the Department of Higher Education, Edmondson served as the Assistant Dean for Students at the University of Mississippi School of Law.

This course is only available to graduate students.

Graduate students in Higher Education/Student Personnel M.A. programs, Ph.D. and Ed.D. students, and Law students interested in Education Policy

Prior to Departure

On Campus: Full Spring

Meet with your Ole Miss instructor and fellow classmates in-person on the Oxford campus for a Full Spring Course on Tuesdays (12:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.)

During Travel

Travel: April 6-9, 2025

  • Students make their own travel arrangements to and from the destination.
  • Study USA will provide Metro Cards for ground transportation around Washington, D.C. during the course.
  • Shared accommodations will be provided near Capitol Hill, offering a convenient base for your stay.
  • Study USA students may have their airfare billed to their bursar account. You’ll receive details upon course enrollment.

At Program End

  • Following travel, you'll return to classes where you'll choose a specific area to create a policy.
  • By the end of the semester, you'll write and present a policy proposal to stakeholders.
  • Doctoral students will also provide an in-depth analysis of the historical context and impact of policies related to their chosen subject.

Who We Are

Study USA is a part of the Office of College Programs, within the Division of Outreach at the University of Mississippi.

The Office of College Programs provides innovative academic opportunities for UM students through unique off-campus educational experiences. Programs include Study USA, the UM Internship Experience, and iStudy.

Study USA partners with UM faculty to offer short-term domestic travel programs across the United States, primarily during intersession and summer terms. Courses connect academic content with experiential learning to enhance student engagement.
