Travel Overview

Go beyond textbooks and lecture halls. Study USA’s travel courses combine academic learning with hands-on, real world experiences. Every class maximizes its unique location with immersive activities. 

You’ll earn academic credit, apply what you’re learning directly to your surroundings, and engage in lively class experiences—all guided by Ole Miss faculty.

What You'll Learn

  • Behavior analysis mastery: Recall and apply knowledge and skills in behavior analysis, and explore how they can be utilized in other professions.
  • Professional insights: Understand what employers and graduate programs seek in rising professionals and students.
  • Lifelong learning: Identify skills necessary to engage in learning throughout your career.
  • Leadership skills: Learn about the essential skills to become a leader in your future profession.

What You'll Do

  • Conference attendance: Participate in a variety of educational sessions at the ABAI Conference.
  • Career development: Attend interviews with potential future employers and with graduate programs in behavior analysis.
  • Networking opportunities: Network with university faculty, professionals, and fellow students through scheduled conference events.
  • Educ 555 students: Develop a research proposal based on one or more symposia at the conference.

All activities are tentative and subject to change depending on scheduling, booking availability, and course adjustments.

Meet Your Instructors

All Study USA courses are designed and led by Ole Miss faculty. Your instructor(s) will be your first point of contact during your travels and lead you through all the class experiences. 

Kate Kellum

Instructional Associate Professor, Director of Undergraduate Studies, & Assistant Chair

Kate holds a masters degree in education from Purdue University and a doctoral degree in psychology from the University of Nevada Reno. She has considerable experience in assessment of educational and research activities, time-series research design, and performance measurement/improvement.

For over 25 years, she has been consulting with schools, universities, and non-profits in the USA and the UK to enhance their ability to implement contextual changes and measure learning and organizational outcomes. Kate regularly designs and conducts research on student learning and preferences.

Kate is an active presenter at national and international conferences and accidentally has more cats than people at her house.

Kayla Crook

Assistant Professor & ABA Program Coordinator

Dr. Crook is an Assistant Professor of Special Education. She is also a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in 2019.

Her area of interests include treatment of severe problem behavior and Tier 1 interventions for elementary classrooms such as the Good Behavior Game.

Ideal for students majoring or minoring in:

Psychology (with Behavior Analysis emphasis), Special Education, Communicative Sciences and Disorders, and Graduate students interested in becoming Board Certified Behavior Analysts

No prerequisites.

Prior to Departure

Virtual or In-person: May 15 & 20, 2025

Choose to meet virtually or in-person. Connect with your Ole Miss instructor and fellow classmates for two days before traveling to D.C.

During Travel

Travel: May 23-27, 2025

  • Students make their own arangments to travel to and from D.C.
  • Double occupancy hotel rooms will be provided in conference hotels, offering a convenient base for your stay.
  • Your instructor will share exact meeting times and locations during pre-departure meetings and will be available to you leading up to the course through Blackboard.
  • Students may have their airfare billed to their bursar account. You’ll receive details upon course enrollment.

At Program End

Virtual: May 30, 2025

  • To close out your learnings from your course, undergraduate students will have a reflection and exit meeting with one of the instructors.
  • Graduate students will submit a research proposal and have an exit meeting with one of the instructors.

Who We Are

Study USA is a part of the Office of College Programs, within the Division of Outreach at the University of Mississippi.

The Office of College Programs provides innovative academic opportunities for UM students through unique off-campus educational experiences. Programs include Study USA, the UM Internship Experience, and iStudy.

Study USA partners with UM faculty to offer short-term domestic travel programs across the United States, primarily during intersession and summer terms. Courses connect academic content with experiential learning to enhance student engagement.
