I am a historian of the American Civil War era, which I consider the most transformative period in the United States's history. As the author of An Unholy Traffic: Slave Trading in the Civil War South, I regularly teach courses on the conflict, its context, and on slavery and emancipation in the United States.
I grew up in Virginia, walking many of these battlefields. They have profoundly shaped my own career, as the encounters they provide with the past inspired me to become a student of the Civil War.
“Battlefields and sites of memory are the best classroom available, and I look forward to sharing them with University of Mississippi students. ”
