A 3-Phase Internship Exploration Program
The UM Internship Experience guides you through every step of your internship journey, with 3 distinct phases over the course of a year. Build skills to help you find an internship, have the best internship experience, and directly apply what you’ll learn to your future studies and career.
The three program phases — combining for a total of three 300-level EDHE academic credit hours — provide not only guidance and support, but a breakdown of the internship process to help you manage your time.
Program Roadmap
Apply to join the program in the phase that best suits your needs. Most students enter the program in Phase 1 where we help them get started.
Phase 1
Fall II (October-December)

What you’ll learn:
- Perfect your professional profile through résumé and cover letter editing
- Discover internship placement options
- Learn networking skills
- Prepare for interviews
Who should apply to enter:
- You’d like help starting your search, want to earn academic credit, and/or you need financial assistance to participate in a summer internship.

Phase 2
Spring I (January-March)

What you’ll learn:
- Meet and learn directly from employers and previous interns.
- Gain networking practice in multiple settings.
- Apply for over 20 internships.
Who should apply to enter:
- You don’t have an internship yet but have strong, competitive professional documents.
Apply by: January 15, 2025
Phase 3
Spring II (March-May)
EDHE 322
What you’ll learn:
- Polish your preparation by understanding workplace dynamics and ways to apply what you’ve learned to your placement.
- Make a smooth transition to life as an intern with logistical preparation and budgeting skills.
- Learn how to connect to resources in a new location.

- You already found a summer internship, and you’d like support making the most of your experience!

Summer Internship
Our mentorship doesn’t end in the classroom – our staff will continue to help you throughout your summer placement:
What you’ll gain:

Guidance and reminders to gain the most from your daily activities during your internship placement and to improve your summer adventure.

Individualized support navigating any unexpected professional or personal issues.

A hub for cohort students to communicate with each other about their experiences.

Access to scholarship & stipends to offset financial need or cost of travel for qualifying UMIE students.
