Parents and Guardians

Courses taken with ConnectUM will be on your student’s official college transcript and will affect both high school and college GPA. Your most important role is to support and encourage your student as they take a significant step toward their college education.

As a college student, students are afforded more independence, which means that ConnectUM will not contact you regarding their grades and progress. You will need to ask your student to learn how they are doing in their courses.

How can I set my student up for success?

  • Communicate with their school. Confirm with teachers and counselors that your student is prepared to succeed in college-level courses.
  • Talk to your student about this responsibility. Explain that, as a college student, they will be responsible for keeping up with their coursework, tracking grades, and communicating concerns with professors. Due to the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) that protects the privacy of student educational records, you won’t be able to monitor their progress as a parent.
  • Complete the ConnectUM Parent Orientation. You may view this orientation at any time, and it will be required for your student to register for courses.

How will my student remain eligible for scholarships?

In order to maintain scholarships, ConnectUM dual enrollment and all other UM dual credit students must continue to pass courses successfully.

  • Dual credit students who do not successfully complete a course for which a scholarship has been issued will not be allowed to take additional courses until they successfully complete a course at their own expense.

Upon successful completion of a subsequent course with a grade of C- or higher, they may apply for a retroactive scholarship to be granted for this course. Dropping a course after the refund date has passed or failing a course are both considered not successfully completing a course.

  • After successful completion of a subsequent dual credit course, dual credit students once again become eligible to be awarded scholarships prior to the start of a term.
