Ole Miss Summer & Winter FAQs
You can take either, depending on the course offerings for each term. However, not all classes are available in both formats.
Yes, we offer housing options during all intersession terms for enrolled students. All students intending to stay on campus must apply for housing for that term.
Summer HousingYour spring dining plan applies to winter term, and you may also add a meal plan during summer terms through Ole Miss Dining.
Course Cancellation Policy
Summer and Winter Intersessions do not receive external funding. Therefore, all operating expenses are paid from generated tuition.
While all effort is made to avoid course cancellations, when a course’s enrollment is too low to cover the course’s operating cost, it will be canceled, and you will be notified by the academic department before the term begins.
Inclement Weather & Closings
State law requires that 3-credit-hour courses meet for a certain amount of time.
- If one day of class is missed due to inclement weather, extra time may be added to the remaining days of the session calendar.
- However, if more than one day is missed, it may be necessary for classes to meet additional days not noted on the published calendar.
All decisions about closing the university due to inclement weather and about making up time lost will be made by the Provost. Students are encouraged to make their plans with the awareness that make-up days may be required, which may include weekends.
For severe weather notifications, sign up for REBALERT through your myOleMiss account.

Winter, May, and August Intersessions
Due to the compressed timeline of 2-week intersessions, you may only take one 3-hour course during an intersession. This allows you the ability to focus on 1 course at a time and maintain a commitment to time spent in the classroom and on coursework.
Summer Sessions
Students typically take between 3 to 9 credit hours (1 to 3 courses), depending on how many summer terms they attend.
For example, you might take 6 credit hours over the course of a Full Summer term or might take 1 course each during May, First Summer, and Second Summer (9 credit hours). Be sure to plan your course schedule carefully since Full Summer dates overlap with First Summer and Second Summer.
The chart below outlines academic full-time enrollment and maximum course loads for undergraduate students, with a complete breakdown available in the UM Catalog.
To register for more than the maximum course load, you must seek permission from your dean’s office.
Academic Full-time Course Load & Maximum Course Load
Term | Full-time Hours | Maximum Course Load |
---|---|---|
Fall | 12 | 19 |
Winter Intersession | 4 | |
Spring | 12 | 19 |

Keep in mind that the Office of Financial Aid defines enrollment levels differently, and your course load could impact your financial aid (scholarships, grants, loans).
Learn more about enrollment and financial aid, or contact Financial Aid for questions about your eligibility.
Federal aid eligibility for summer and winter is not guaranteed and depends on several factors, including your enrollment status, satisfactory academic progress, and the amount of aid used during the Fall and Spring terms.
Attending a session may increase your cost of attendance to cover additional tuition, fees, and extra meals. For students not already at their limits, the amount of aid you receive may be impacted.
Financial Aid Credit Hour Calculation
For calculating credit hours, the financial aid award year is divided as follows:
- Fall: Includes Fall Semester, First Fall, and Second Fall
- Spring: Winter Intersession is considered part of the Spring semester, which includes Winter Intersession, Spring Semester, First Spring, and Second Spring.
- Your Spring aid may apply towards Winter and Spring charges.
- Summer: Summer sessions are included at the end of the financial aid year that includes May Intersession, First Summer, Full Summer, Second Summer, and August Intersession.
