Get Started Teaching Online
Find information on the process and training needed to become an online instructor at UM.
Process to Teach Online
First Step
Discuss online teaching with your academic chair. Identify the course and term to offer.
Second Step
Complete the Online Teaching Endorsement course. Do this at least 2 weeks prior to your teaching term.
Third Step
Receive an Award of Completion for the Online Teaching Endorsement. You’re now endorsed to teach online at UM!
Fourth Step
Plan your online course. Work with an Instructional Designer to plan your online course.
Become a UM Online Instructor
To become an online instructor at UM, you must first complete the Online Teaching Endorsement course to become endorsed by the Office of Academic Outreach.
This course covers the basics of online course design and reviews essential skills, best practices, and tools for online teaching at the university. Sign up on your own. No prep necessary.

Blackboard Set-Up Basics
This informational workshop is recommended for all instructors new to Blackboard, the university’s course management system. This course guides instructors in detail about building a course in Blackboard Learn Ultra. Choose between a virtual live workshop or self-enroll in the Ultra how-to course, and work at your own pace.
